WHAT IS WOOD BADGE?
Scout Leader Wood Badge is an Advanced Training Course in Scouting, Leadership Skills and Unit Operation. It is intended to develop appropriate Scouting knowledge, skills and attitude in adult leaders involved directly with the operation of Scout Units.

Tri-Council selects only the most qualified volunteer trainers to present this National Program and it is accomplished in the best manner possible for Scouters in our communities.  We've combined the training teams from the Verdugo Hills, San Gabriel Valley and Long Beach Area Councils to jointly provide Wood Badge training - a partnership that has been one of the most successful cluster courses in BSA's Western Region for over THIRTY years, consistently Delivering the Promise.

WHO IS QUALIFIED TO ATTEND?
You qualify to participate in this exciting experience if you are an adult leader registered in the BSA and have completed the Basic Training Course for your Scouting position.

While Wood Badge is not a survival course, there will be significant outdoor activity with lots of exercise.  You must provide a Current BSA Class 3 Medical Form signed by an appropriate medical person, with medical clearance dated between 6 October 2007 and 4 September 2008.  This needs to be submitted in time for use in planning and for the duration of the course.

A TWO-STEP PROCESS

Step 1: The Practical Course
For two 3-day weekends (about 8AM Friday to 7PM Sunday), you will live, learn and work with a group of fellow Scouters in an outdoor environment, while being exposed to the Leadership Skills applicable to the development of high-performance teams.  You will also develop a get of goals (the "Ticket") to be completed in the 18 months following the course.

Step 1: The Application Phase (6 October 2008 - 5 April 2010)
During the application phase you will apply the leadership skills that you learned during the course by working the goals (the "ticket") that you established and that your Troop Guide/Ticket Counselor approved during the course.  Throughout this period, your guide acts as a resource counselor and a Scouting Friend to help you complete your "ticket" and accomplish your goals in Scouting.  After your guide confirms you achieved your goals, you will receive the Wood Badge neckerchief, woggle and beads, a worldwide recognition, to wear with your Scouting Field Uniform.

NOTE: Leadership skills learned at Wood Badge are often considered valuable to employers. In many cases, employers have given Scouters time off without loss of vacation time to attend Wood Badge.

Uniform and Other Needs
For the course, Scouters will need a complete BSA uniform for the program in which they are currently registered.  This includes Shirt, Pants and/or Shorts, appropriate Socks and Belt.  Information on other clothing and equipment needs will be provided to each registered participant prior to the course.

Religious Observances
Our Wood Badge course includes an Interfaith Worship Service on Sunday mornings during the course.

THE COST, ETC...
The total cost to attend Wood Badge 2008 is $210 due by 5 August 2008.  This fee covers training materials, food for the first weekend, some food for the second weekend and recognition items.  In addition, participants will need to supply their own personal camping gear, some food for the second weekend and uniforms.

If you're ready to join in the time-honored tradition, hear the Kudu Horn and take the next exciting step on the Scouting Trail to better Leadership.... accept our Invitation and submit the completed Application form.  A deposit of at least $50 (refundable up to 60 days prior to the beginning of the course) is required at registration.  After that date partial refund, if any, is at the discretion of the host council.
